About

A resident of Westchester County, New York, Otisha Ayala-Faya has been a professional interpreter since 1995. She is nationally certified as an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID-NIC). She is also a qualified Spanish interpreter. As a registered interpreter for the New York State Unified Court System for about 15 years, she is asked to cover special cases that require trilingual interpretation.

Throughout her career, Otisha has worked intensively as a systems advocate and language access consultant. She served for several years as a hospital administrator for interpreting services, a medical interpreter trainer, a patient advocate and an ADA & LEP compliance trainer at one of the largest medical centers in New York City. She also served as an advisory board member on medical interpretation and best practices with the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA).

 Otisha has over 20 years’ of experience teaching and training.  Her teaching and training experience include Intro to ASL, English as a Second Language (ESL), Interpreter training classes and workshops, disability sensitivity training, language access laws and cultural competence/responsiveness training.  Otisha has been a licensed nationwide interpreter trainer since 2004. She has conducted language access training for the City of San Jose, CA and the Mississippi Department of Health and Human Services; as well as NYC Police Department, NYC Human Resources Administration, and numerous non-profit organizations. She has a special love and passion for teaching and for the Deaf, hard of hearing and multicultural language communities that she serves daily. In her role as a mentor to new interpreters and college students, she works on relating theories of professional practice to real life situations.  She continuously thrives in understanding how best to serve the interpreting community around her, and shares her passion and her experiences in the classroom, providing a safe and beneficial learning environment to all of her aspiring and working interpreting students.
